On October 12,1985 my third child, Derek Joseph, was stillborn at 39 weeks and 4 days.

Things were done differently in 1985, but I was lucky enough to have staff that let me hold him for 3 hours and take a few priceless pictures - both were not allowed 32 years ago. Hospital protocol said he had to be off of the OB Floor in 20 minutes, the staff broke the rules and I am eternally grateful that they did.

Even though Derek was born still, he has touched and changed the lives of thousands of people.

I believe I known the purpose for his short life… I believe he was born so that IRIS would be founded and thousands helped each year.
